Straits Commercial Art Co.

Since its opening in 1947, the art store, Straits Commercial, has grown in popularity with artists in Singapore.  This is partly due to its specialised range of painting and sculpture products, as well as the excellent product knowledge from its staff. Indeed, the friendly staff in this family-run business often go the extra mile in giving customers detailed advice, recommendations and suggestions. Not sure what the difference between two products is? Not to worry, as you are more than likely to receive an enthusiastic explanation from the store owner.

Productwise, they sell a good range of high quality oil (Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Schmincke and Louvre) and acrylic paints (Rembrandt, Amsterstam, Liquitex and Golden Acrylic) - including water-soluble oil paint; watercolours, pastels, brushes, canvas, grounds and varnishes, etching tools and supplies, wood/relief carving and lithography supplies, dry painting media and graphic materials such as air gun spray painting inks and accoutrements.

They pretty much stock everything the professional artist needs, from sketchbooks and easels to brushes of every type and variety. Conservation materials are also sold here, as well as a good selection of basic printmaking papers. For those in the know, they have Rives BFK Arches both hot and cold-pressed; but please check beforehand, as these sometimes run out. If you’re looking for a particularly exclusive material, you can try asking the owner if he might consider bringing it in with his next batch of goods.

You might miss this store if you have not been here before. However, Straits Commercial is not difficult to find, as it is conveniently located opposite the National Library at City Hall.
